KARIEGA FOUNDATION

The Kariega Foundation is a non-profit trust operating in partnership with the Kariega Game Reserve, a major private safari reserve in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Situated at the intersection of two global biodiversity hotspots, the foundation's core mission is to balance wildlife conservation with community development and empowerment.
Core Focus Areas:
-
Wildlife & Anti-Poaching: Operates an Anti-Poaching Unit (APU) with specialist rangers, tracking technology, and K9 units. They gained widespread international recognition through the recovery and story of Thandi, a rhino who survived a severe poaching attack in 2012.
-
Habitat Restoration & Biodiversity: Acquires, restores, and connects wilderness areas to rebuild natural ecosystems and manages native species reintroductions, including apex predators like cheetahs.
-
Community Upliftment & Education: Supports neighboring communities through early childhood development programs, local school infrastructure, sports coaching, enterprise development, and vocational training.
-
Community-Based Conservation: Recruits and trains rangers directly from surrounding local villages to ensure long-term, community-led stewardship of protected land.
